Cyprus Family Holiday: Tips for Paphos & Coral Bay with Kids

In short

A Cyprus family holiday works best if you want shallow sandy beaches, warm sea and short journeys. In the west around Paphos and Coral Bay you will find calm bays, Pafos Zoo and a water park. Ayia Napa and Protaras in the east are bigger beach resorts. The best time for families to visit is May, June, September and October.

Planning your next family holiday and wondering whether a Cyprus family holiday is right for you and your kids? We live in Coral Bay near Paphos and rent out two holiday villas here, where families often stay. In this guide we show you where to stay in Cyprus with children, the best time to go, which beaches are shallow and calm, and which days out kids love. All distances are measured with a route planner, so you can plan your family holiday to Cyprus with real numbers.

Why Cyprus is a great choice for a family holiday

Cyprus combines much of what makes a holiday with children relaxed: plenty of Mediterranean sunshine, warm sea and sandy beaches where the water often shelves gently. From May to October it rains in Paphos on only a few days a month. Direct flights from the UK land at Paphos and Larnaca airports. You pay in euros, and almost everyone speaks English – which makes everyday life with the family easy. Read more in our guides to currency and prices in Cyprus and the language in Cyprus.

Safety also matters for families. Cyprus is considered a calm destination; what you should know about road traffic, sun and emergency numbers is covered in our article Is Cyprus safe?. Good news for UK families: Cyprus drives on the left, and the sockets are the British Type G – so your UK plugs work without an adapter (all about plugs and entry requirements).

Where to stay in Cyprus with kids: east or west?

The most important question when planning is: where to stay in Cyprus? The island has two main holiday regions, and they suit a family holiday in Cyprus in different ways.

Ayia Napa and Protaras in the east

Ayia Napa and Protaras lie east of Larnaca. The resorts are known for sandy beaches such as Nissi Beach and Fig Tree Bay and for the large WaterWorld water park in Ayia Napa. That makes the east popular with families who mainly want a beach hotel or an all-inclusive resort. In summer, though, it gets very busy. If you stay in the west, WaterWorld is around 180 kilometres from Coral Bay – a good two and a half hours by car according to the route planner. That is more of a day trip for older kids than for younger children.

Paphos and Coral Bay in the west

The west around Paphos is quieter. Coral Bay is a small resort near the village of Peyia, north of Paphos, with a shallow sandy beach, cafés, tavernas, a restaurant for every taste and supermarkets within walking distance (see our Coral Bay restaurant guide and shopping guide). From here you can reach Pafos Zoo, the waterpark in Geroskipou, the Sea Caves, Paphos harbour and the archaeological sites of Paphos in a short time. Paphos Airport is around 24 kilometres away, about 35 to 40 minutes by hire car (getting to Coral Bay).

Limassol, Larnaca and Nicosia

Limassol, in the middle of the south coast, is a lively city with a promenade and hotels right on the beach. Larnaca has the island’s largest airport and a town beach. Nicosia, inland, is the capital – interesting for a day trip, but hot in summer and without a sea. For a beach holiday with young children, the coastal resorts are the better choice.

Tip from Kimmy & ChristianChoose one region instead of driving across the whole island with kids. From Coral Bay to Ayia Napa you spend a good two and a half hours in the car each way – better to keep journeys short and spend more time on the beach.

Best time to visit Cyprus with kids

The best time for a Cyprus family holiday depends on how well your family copes with heat. The figures are for Paphos on the west coast (source: weather2travel, see our guide to the best time to visit Cyprus):

MonthDay °CSea °CFor families
May2420warm, first swims
June2824great for swimming
July3027hot, school holidays
August3028hot and busy
September2926great for swimming
October2524warm, quieter

July and August are the hottest and busiest months. With young children, May to October is good overall, but June, September and October are the most pleasant: the sea is warm and the midday heat is easier to handle. If you visit Cyprus with kids in October, you still get beach weather and far fewer crowds – ideal for the UK October half term. From mid-April it is warm enough for days out, but the sea is still fresh for swimming. Cyprus is mild in winter too – see our tips for Cyprus in winter.

Family-friendly beaches near Paphos and Coral Bay

For kids, what counts is shallow water, sand and short walks to toilets and shade. These beaches near us are particularly good:

  • Coral Bay Beach: a bay of light sand around 500 metres long, awarded the Blue Flag for 2026. The water is usually calm and shallow, with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars and tavernas right behind it. From our villas it is around 800 metres on foot.
  • Corallia Beach (Laourou): the smaller neighbouring bay west of Coral Bay, also with a Blue Flag. Breakwaters keep the water especially calm and shallow – ideal for a toddler. 4 minutes by car.
  • Lighthouse Beach in Paphos: a sandy beach on the edge of town, easy to combine with a visit to the Archaeological Park.

Less suitable for small children are Potima Bay, where the water is often rough and there are no lifeguards, and the rocky coast at the Sea Caves. You will find all swimming spots with distances in our guide to the beaches near Coral Bay and in our overview of Paphos beaches.

Tip from Kimmy & ChristianTake the kids to the beach in the morning and again from late afternoon. The midday sun in Cyprus is very strong – a break in the shade or by the pool is the better choice then.

Things to do in Cyprus with kids

Around Paphos there are several family attractions that kids enjoy – most of them less than half an hour from Coral Bay.

Pafos Zoo

Pafos Zoo is near Agios Georgios, around 7 kilometres or about 11 minutes by car from Coral Bay. Giraffes, tigers, kangaroos, meerkats and lots of parrots live here, and there is a bird show three times a day. The zoo opens every day of the year from 9 am. Allow at least three hours.

Aphrodite Waterpark in Geroskipou

Paphos Aphrodite Waterpark is in Geroskipou, east of Paphos – around 16 kilometres or just under half an hour by car from Coral Bay. For younger children there is a separate kids’ area with a children’s pool, small slides and water play, plus a lazy river with no age or height restriction. Some slides are only allowed from 120 centimetres or from age 12. According to the water park, children under 3 always go free. The park is open in season from April to October, in July and August from 10 am to 6 pm.

Sea Caves and the Edro III shipwreck

Just 11 minutes by car from Coral Bay are the Sea Caves and the wreck of the Edro III. The stranded cargo ship lies a few metres off the rocky coast – an exciting photo stop for kids. Swimming here is only possible from the rocks, so it is not for little swimmers.

Tombs of the Kings and the Archaeological Park

For older kids, the Tombs of the Kings in Nea Paphos are a small adventure: steps lead down into underground burial chambers. In the Paphos Archaeological Park, Roman mosaics with animals and gods are waiting. Bring water and a hat, as there is little shade at either of these historical sites.

Paphos Harbour and Castle

An evening walk along the Paphos harbour promenade is easy with kids: fishing boats, the small medieval castle at the end of the pier and ice cream on the way. Boat trips also leave from the harbour – a good way to explore the coastline with older children.

Akamas, Aphrodite’s Rock and the Camel Park

The Akamas peninsula with Lara Bay is pure nature – best as a short trip with kids. Aphrodite’s Rock – the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love – is worth a stop on the way to Limassol. Many families know the Camel Park near Mazotos between Limassol and Larnaca; from Coral Bay, however, it is around 130 kilometres or about two hours’ drive. For more ideas, see our overview of things to do around Coral Bay.

Accommodation: family resort or holiday villa?

Many families book a hotel or apartment – often one of the best family resorts in Cyprus, a beach hotel with kids’ club, buffet, pool facilities and sun loungers. A holiday villa, on the other hand, gives you more space and peace: your own kitchen for baby food and snacks, separate bedrooms for parents and children, an outdoor area just for you and a private pool without other hotel guests. Which accommodation suits you depends on whether you want everything organised or prefer self-catering freedom. How all inclusive and a private villa compare on rights, costs and everyday life is covered in our honest comparison of all inclusive and a private villa.

Our two villas, Asteria and Halia in Coral Bay, each have three bedrooms for up to 6 guests, a private pool and a fully equipped kitchen. Together they sleep up to 12 people – ideal if grandparents or friends’ families come along. We provide a cot free of charge on request. Coral Bay beach is around 800 metres away; about 11 minutes on foot according to the route planner, though we usually make it in 8. You can check availability and book directly with us – without a platform service fee.

Eating out with kids is easy in Cyprus. A Cypriot taverna serves meze, grilled meat, fresh fish and Greek salad, and many restaurants in the resorts also have pizza and pasta on the menu.

Important for parents: the pools at our villas are not fenced. Young children must therefore always be supervised by an adult at and in the pool.

Car hire and child seats in Cyprus

For days out with kids, a hire car in Cyprus is almost essential – buses run between Coral Bay and Paphos, but not to every attraction. Note the rules for children in the car: children under 5 may not sit in the front passenger seat, and children aged 5 to 10 only with a suitable child seat. It is best to book a child seat or baby seat together with the hire car. Everything else about driving and insurance is in our guides to car rental in Cyprus and car hire at Paphos Airport.
