Peyia, Cyprus: Our Village Guide to Pegeia, Coral Bay and Agios Georgios
Peyia (Greek Πέγεια, also spelled Pegeia) is a hillside village about 15 km north-west of Paphos, with the resort of Coral Bay on the coast below. Since July 2024 it has been part of Akamas Municipality. Highlights include the village square with its 1908 fountain, the church of Panagia Eisodion and, on the coast, Agios Georgios with three Early Christian basilicas, Geronisos island and the sea caves with the Edro III wreck.
We live in Coral Bay, which belongs to Peyia. In this guide we show you our neighbourhood: the village of Peyia on the hill, the coastline between Coral Bay and Agios Georgios and what to see there – with sourced facts.
Where Is Peyia in Cyprus? A Coastal Hillside Village with Panoramic Sea Views
Peyia lies in Paphos district on the west coast of Cyprus, about 15 km northwest of Paphos town, at the southern edge of the Akamas peninsula. The village sits at around 200 metres on steep coastal hills above the Mediterranean Sea, and many spots have panoramic sea views over Coral Bay and the coastline towards Paphos. Pegeia Forest covers the hills above the village.
Peyia was declared a municipality in 1994. Since the local government reform of 1 July 2024, it has been one of seven municipal districts of the new Akamas Municipality, together with Akoursos, Ineia, Kathikas, Kato Arodes, Kissonerga and Pano Arodes.
The Popular Village of Peyia: Cypriot Square, Fountain and Churches
The Fountains of Peyia (Vrisi ton Peyiotisson)
The historic fountain stands on the picturesque, paved village square. It was built in 1908, probably on the site of an older fountain, and was the village’s main source of drinking water until 1956. The village center grew up around the church and the fountain, and today there are cafés and tavernas here.
Panagia Eisodion Church
Pegeia’s main church, Panagia Eisodion, was built in 1883, consecrated by the Bishop of Paphos in 1885 and restored in 2001. The chapel of Agia Aikaterini stands right in front of it.
Chapels Around Peyia
There are more chapels around Peyia, including Agia Matrona near Toxeftra, overlooking Geronisos island, and Panagia Zalakiotissa on the site of a monastery that was active until the early 19th century.
Coral Bay: Peyia’s Beach Resort
Below Peyia lies Coral Bay with its sandy Blue Flag beach, and right next door is Laourou Beach. This is where we live and where our villas are. Bus route 615 runs from the Tombs of the Kings bus station in Paphos via Chloraka and the coastal road at Kissonerga to Coral Bay. For more on the beaches, see our guide to the beaches around Coral Bay.
Agios Georgios: Basilicas, Harbour and Geronisos Island
About 4.5 km from Peyia, Agios Georgios sits on Cape Drepano – a small coastal settlement with a fishing harbour, a church and one of the most interesting archaeological sites on the west coast.
Agios Georgios Archaeological Site
Between 1952 and 1955 the Department of Antiquities excavated three Early Christian basilicas and a 6th-century bath here. The settlement flourished under Emperor Justinian I (527–565) and was possibly a port on the grain route from Egypt to Constantinople. The basilicas have mosaic floors with animal scenes, and a necropolis with rock-cut tombs faces Geronisos island. According to Visit Cyprus, admission is €2.50.
Agios Georgios Church
Next to a small chapel from the late 13th or early 14th century stands a newer stone church consecrated on 4 October 1952. It is a well-known place of pilgrimage.
Geronisos Island
About 280 metres off the coast lies uninhabited Geronisos (Yeronisos). It was occupied in the late Hellenistic period, around 80–30 BC – the time of Cleopatra – and probably had a sanctuary of Apollo. New York University has been excavating here since 1989.
Sea Caves and the Edro III Shipwreck
Between Coral Bay and Agios Georgios, the coastline has sea caves in the limestone. Since 8 December 2011, the cargo ship Edro III has been aground on the rocks offshore. It was on its way from Limassol to Rhodes.
Day Trips from Peyia: Akamas, Lara and Avakas
