Petra tou Romiou: the myth of the birthplace of Aphrodite

Aphrodite’s Rock, in Greek Petra tou Romiou, is a large sea stack off a pebbly beach on the south-west coast of Cyprus. According to legend, the Greek goddess of love and beauty rose from the sea here – which is why the spot is known as the birthplace of Aphrodite.

In the myth told by the poet Hesiod in his Theogony, Aphrodite was born from the foam of the sea after Cronus castrated his father Uranus and threw his genitals into the sea. The waves carried the goddess first to Kythera and then to Cyprus, where she came ashore on this beach. In certain weather the waves form a column of spray at the rock that looks like a human figure for a moment.

The Greek name “Petra tou Romiou” means “Rock of the Greek” and comes from a later local legend: the Byzantine hero Digenis Akritas is said to have hurled huge rocks from the Troodos Mountains into the sea to fend off Saracen raiders.

Another legend says that anyone who swims around the rock three times will be blessed with eternal youth and beauty, good luck or true love – which makes the rock a favourite photo stop for couples.

Getting to Aphrodite’s Rock from Paphos and Coral Bay

The rock lies right beside the old coastal road between Paphos and Limassol, near the village of Kouklia and about 25 km east of Paphos. From Coral Bay, home to our villas Asteria and Halia, it is about 35 km – roughly 40 minutes by car (Google Maps, without traffic).

Parking is free at the visitor centre on the inland side of the road, which also has toilets and a kiosk selling drinks and souvenirs. A tunnel leads under the road to the beach, so you don’t need to cross the busy road. There are no showers or changing rooms on the beach.

Without a car you can visit on a guided tour – many day trips from Paphos to Limassol stop at the rock.

Swimming at Aphrodite’s Rock: swim around the rock?

Swimming is allowed, but the sea here is often rough. There are strong, unpredictable currents around the rocks and no lifeguards, so stay close to the shore and don’t go in when there are waves. If you want to try the legend and swim around the rock, only do so as a confident swimmer in calm sea. Climbing the rock is not permitted.

The beach is made of smooth, round pebbles – water shoes make getting into the sea much more comfortable.
