Turquoise water, a sheltered bay and boat trips from Latchi harbour – how to visit the Blue Lagoon from Coral Bay

← All things to do around Coral Bay

At a glance
  • Where: on the north-west coastline of the Akamas Peninsula in the Paphos district, between the Baths of Aphrodite and Fontana Amorosa.
  • Getting there: easiest by boat from Latchi harbour – the boat trip takes about 30 minutes. By car only on rough dirt tracks.
  • From Coral Bay: about 32 km and just under 40 minutes by car to Latchi.
  • Best for: swimming and snorkelling in crystal clear, turquoise water with plenty of marine life around the rocks.
  • Don’t mix it up: there is a second “Blue Lagoon” in the east of Cyprus near Ayia Napa and Protaras.

What is the Blue Lagoon in Cyprus?

The Blue Lagoon is a sheltered bay on the north-west coast of the Akamas Peninsula. It lies in the Akamas National Forest Park – often just called Akamas National Park – one of the last largely unspoilt stretches of coastline in Cyprus, in the north of the Paphos district.

A small rocky island sits at the mouth of the bay. The water is shallow with a sandy sea bed and a few rocks below the surface. Because the bay is sheltered, the sea is usually calm and so clear that the turquoise water glows in the sun – the colour that made the lagoon famous. Fish gather around the rocks, so it is worth bringing a snorkel.

All around, the Akamas Peninsula shows its natural scenery: limestone cliffs, scrubland and small coves with hardly any buildings. There are no hotels, beach bars or sunbed hire. For many visitors that is exactly what makes this the highlight of a holiday in Cyprus.

Important: Cyprus has two places with this name. The other Blue Lagoon is in the east of the island near Ayia Napa and Protaras. When you book a boat trip, check where it leaves from: boats to the Blue Lagoon on the Akamas Peninsula depart from Latchi, or from Paphos with a transfer.

How to get to the Blue Lagoon on the Akamas Peninsula

By boat from Latchi harbour – our recommendation

The easiest way is via Latchi harbour near Polis. Boats follow the Akamas coastline past the Baths of Aphrodite to the lagoon. The boat journey itself takes about half an hour. Besides organised cruises you can also hire a boat in Latchi or book a private charter.

From Coral Bay, home to our villas Asteria and Halia, it is about 32 km to Latchi, just under 40 minutes by car (Google Maps, without traffic).

By car or 4×4

Overland, the Blue Lagoon can only be reached on dirt tracks starting at the car park at the Baths of Aphrodite. In April 2026 the Cyprus Audit Office warned of potholes, loose stones and steep drops on the track towards Fontana Amorosa. A normal hire car is not suitable, and many rental agreements exclude unpaved roads – check yours first. If you want to drive yourself you need a proper 4×4. A guided jeep safari is the easier option.

On foot

Fit hikers can explore the coast on the trails from the Baths of Aphrodite. The loop via the Blue Lagoon and Manolis Bay is almost 20 km long and demanding. There is no drinking water on the way and it gets very hot in summer, so take plenty of water and sun protection. The final descent to the water is over rocks.

Blue Lagoon cruise and boat trips from Latchi and Paphos

Most visitors arrive by boat. The trips mainly differ in where they start, how long they take and what is included:

  • From Latchi: cruises of two and a half to four hours with a swim stop in the lagoon, usually with drinks and fruit on board. In the afternoon there are also barbecue cruises until sunset.
  • From Paphos with bus transfer: half-day trips of four and a half to five hours with pick-up – according to the operator also at several points in Coral Bay.
  • Jeep safari and boat: day trips across the Akamas Peninsula combined with a boat trip to the lagoon.
  • Boat hire or private charter: for families and groups who want to go at their own pace.

Tips for your visit

  • Go early: the bay is quieter in the morning. In high summer many boats anchor in the lagoon at midday.
  • Bring a snorkel: you will see fish and seagrass around the rocks.
  • Bring supplies: there are no facilities at the bay itself. Take water, snacks and sun protection. On boat trips drinks are served on board.
  • Watch out for boats: keep your distance from motorboats when swimming and stay within sight of your own boat.
  • Protect nature: the peninsula is a protected area – take your litter home.
  • Check the weather: boat trips depend on the weather and are cancelled in strong wind. Outside the main season, check in advance that trips are running.
Tip: take the morning cruise from Latchi and plan a fish lunch at one of the tavernas by the harbour afterwards. That turns the boat trip into a relaxed day trip.

What to combine with the Blue Lagoon: Baths of Aphrodite, sea caves and more near Paphos

  • Baths of Aphrodite: the grotto from Greek mythology, a few minutes’ drive west of Latchi. The Aphrodite and Adonis trails, two loops of about 7.5 km each, also start at the car park.
  • Latchi and Polis: fish tavernas by the harbour, a pebble beach and the relaxed little town of Polis Chrysochous.
  • Akamas Peninsula: jeep tours to more coves such as Fontana Amorosa and Lara Bay, where sea turtles lay their eggs.
  • Sea caves near Coral Bay: on the way back, stop at the sea caves and the Edro III shipwreck near Peyia – a great place to sightsee at sunset, just a few minutes from our villas.
  • Avakas Gorge: closed by the Forestry Department since 6 December 2025 (as of May 2026). Check the current status before you go.
